Happy Anti-Procrastination Day

I went to the gym this afternoon and it was so crowded. Much more crowded than usual and it struck me that all of these extra people were full of good intentions, otherwise known as “New Year’s resolutions”. There was a line at the desk and countless people waiting around for an employee to bring them their gym contract and their extra large planet fitness t-shirt. That’s right, they only have the one size, or at least that was the only size they had when I registered. I guess XL could be considered a one-size-fits all thing, but it seems more to be one size fits some and drapes over others. Maybe the t-shirt functions as the pair of jeans that are often used in weight loss commercials: the pair that used to fit, but look at them now!

Another entertaining aspect of Planet Fitness is their motto: a judgment free zone. There’s even this thing called a “lunk alarm” which sounds whenever anyone grunts or passes judgment on others. I guess it’s a catchy shtick, but I’m fairly certain that most people spend their entire time at the gym passing judgment on everyone else and on themselves. And a lot of people go to the gym as to not be judged for not going to the gym. The list goes on. So while it’s a nice thought, sorry Planet Fitness, you had better sound the alarms.

Anyway, so when I saw the inrush of new gym members with their crisp, new workout clothing, I started to think about new years resolutions. I didn’t make one this year, or rather I made a new years wish instead: to be employed at this time next year. Hopefully that will happen, and I guess my unofficial resolution is to remain optimistic about that job search. But, there was nothing that I felt the need to drastically change about myself this year, or rather there was nothing that I planned to start changing on January 1st. It’s amusing how the first day of the year gives so many people a kick in the pants. It’s a nice thought to make the coming year a better one, to turn over a new leaf, to start afresh, to blaze a new trail, begin on the right foot. Okay, sorry, I’m done with the clichés. But I guess it’s just entertaining that three quarters of the population seem to have made that new years resolution about something related to their weight, or fitness. I suppose it makes sense because over the holidays so many people complain about the fact that they have gained weight from all of the sweets they have consumed, but how many of these people are going to actually stick to their newly founded regimes? How many will falter and make the same exact pledge next year?

Why does everything start on the 1st? Is it because people want to start the new year afresh, because they want to work off those pounds from the holidays (since they figure the holidays are all about indulging in vices), or is it something else? It seems as though that day has become a day of anti-procrastination. There is no putting it off until tomorrow on the first day of the New Year, because that day functions as the universal “tomorrow,” so to speak. So whether it be a new diet, to quit smoking, to join the gym, to spend more time with the family, there is no whining or excuses that are tolerated on January 1st.  And once the 3rd or 4th rolls around, another year of procrastination awaits.
